How to heal sunburn faster?

Question 1
How to heal sunburn faster?…  How can i heal sunburn on my shoulders fast

Answers
1)   ummm…sunblock? – Bre L

2)   put some petroleum jelly on it – Strawberry

3)   with alot of aloe vera gel. aloe vera has alot of healing properties. – Twitchy

4)   There are several things you can do to take care of this and help speed the natural process.

Soak milk in a wash rag and place it all over the burn, or take a bath and pour milk in the bathtub.

Another thing you can do is take an epsom salt bath. Epsom salt you can buy just about anywhere in the section where you get hydrogen peroxide, alcohol, etc. Put a couple of handfuls of it in a bath.

Make sure the bath water is luke warm.

You can also soak in a tub of baking soda. Same temp, and same couple handfuls.

Another very good tip that I figured out myself long time ago (I live near the beach and have had my more than handful of sunburns), is this:

Go buy some 100 percent aloe vera gel. You can get this in the tanning lotion section of the store.

After you get out of the bath or shower, DO NOT DRY WITH A TOWEL. Apply the aloe vera gel liberally and let yourself AIR DRY ONLY. This will take away the redness and speed the healing and keep you from peeling. Continue to apply the aloe vera gel like every couple of hours.

The epsom salt, baking soda, will keep it from burning and itching and speed the healing process, the milk will do the same too.

The worse thing you can do is go out in the sun again and burn on top of burn-that’s not good at all.

(the milk thing sounds yucky but it is very soothing and helps heal)

Also you might notice a you will have a layer of the aloe gel stuck to your skin..that’s okay it will wash off. – lemondrop

Question 2
I suffer from eye strain issues, but I need to be able to work at a computer for extended periods?…  As the title suggests, I have minor headaches from time to time from being at the computer for extended periods of time (upwards of seven hours daily; aside from checking my messages, it’s mostly productive, mind you!). I plan to occupy myself this summer in taking commissions, and assuming that I’m successful in getting requests for my work, I’d like to be able to take every available opportunity to draw so that I may get the requests out in a timely fashion.

My issue comes in, however, in my inability to stay at a computer as long as I need without my eyes/head starting to hurt. It really does get rather tiring. Any suggestions?

Answers
1)   Look away from the computer screen and let your eyes focus on something else for a couple seconds then go back to working on the computer. – Drogo Boffin

2)   Go to an optometrist and get glasses for this. I was surprised to find out that our eyes often need a bit of help with this, but many of us need the help. Not too many people have vision that is perfect for close, medium, and distance work. Computers fall into the medium range. – Revolutionary

3)   you need to focus on objects at a verity of distances from you as you use the computer. start doing it every 10 min or so for a good 5 to 20 seconds. pick a few things under different lighting conditions at different ranges each time you take that short brake. a window helps with this, and as everybody knows good bright lighting when staring at any glowing box for hours is a must. – darcy

4)   Take breaks from your computer when you can. Rest your eyes as often as you can. If light affects you, you might be magnesium deficient. That is one of the symptoms.

Look up the source. This may be a precursor to migraines. – Sans

Question 3
Is sun burnt skin peeling bad?…  Is it bad to have your skin peeling from a sun burn?

Answers
1)   No. It’s normal. Use some aloe vera gel. Make sure it’s pure aloe vera. You don’t need anything else in it. If it blisters that means you have 2nd degree burns. These can scar and you will want to consult a doctor about those. – Revolutionary

2)   it has to do that then after that it will grow back – Eddie

3)   ummm not so much bad just really weird and discusting – j@Ke

Question 4
How can I help heal the bruises on my arm?…  I had a couple small blue bruises and like a moron I was rubbing them (i read it would help a lil to massage turns out i did it WAY too hard) now they are big red smears! They dont hurt but now they are big and I look like a beat up wife or a junkie (which i obviously am not) I tried ICE and water (which again im probably making it worse) Im pretty tan naturally but i went tanning to make my skin darker so they arent so noticecable but im not trying to look like hulk hogan….I tried make up and IMO it loks worse that wa

I have today and tomorrow off from work..and its pretty damn hot I dont want 2 b wearing long sleeves!
No i am VERY clumsy its even a joke @ work. They werent just random im sure i bumped into stuff.. I always do

Answers
1)   use hot then cold and switch back and forth – Samantha

2)   the same way you make your hair grow faster. – ellen degenitals

3)   It could be that the spreading is just the bruises coming out naturally, but you’ve made it worse by rubbing them – that’ll teach you to believe everything you read! Especially here – there are some rubbish answers. If by tanning you mean sunbeds, they are potentially dangerous, and they won’t help damaged skin. If you are worried, there’s only one sensible answer – see a doctor. – 7th Legion

Question 5
Whats a good way to sleep through class without getting busted?…

Answers
1)   Take some scotch tape cut it into the shape of the eye. Color it the color of you eye and put it on your eyelid. Think the Johnny Depp movie. Looks a little odd but I’ve done it at work and no one noticed. Of course I was awake and just walking around with one eye closed. – I Shall Be That I Shall Be

2)   I’ve tried many times but have failed miserably.

If you don’t mind getting busted you can try these.

1. Sit in towards the back of the room. If the size of your classroom is relatively small, you will probably have a slightly trickier time getting by, but it is still usually possible if attempted correctly. Even in the largest classrooms, the front row students can be caught dozing. This is not the place to sit if you want to tune out the lecture.

2. Have something on your desk. If your desk is empty and you are hunched over leaning on your hands, the teacher might grow suspicious. It’s usually a good idea to have a book open. It doesn’t even have to be the right book, as long as it’s about the right size and open to pages full of smaller text nobody should have any reason to wonder.

They never worked for me, but they might work for you. =] – Lulu

3)   Tell the teacher you are exhausted and require immediate downtime. There ARE times it is necessary! We all have a job to do. And so, it is true: you SNOOZE-YOU lose! It is your life. you are at the wheel. If you want to sleep, then sleep. Where you end up is on you! *This pattern will repeat itself endlessly* – GOOFY

I think there’s glass in my foot?!?

Question 1
I think there’s glass in my foot?!?…  I was walking in my uncle’s home, and I stepped on a piece of glass…It looked like an upsidedown icicle, and no one knows how it stood up like that on its own, but I stepped on it, (it was maybe 1/4 inch into my foot) and I pulled it out right away as a part of my immediate reaction. If I put pressure on it with my hand, it doesn’t hurt, but if I stand on an area around the hole in my foot, it hurts.

Is there a way to tell?

I bite my nails. How can i stop?…

Answers
1)   put your whole hand in your mouth – Peter

2)   Find a hobby. I never really did, if i bite my nails and rub them on something they get caught and all like a little jagged, the feel on them sends chills down my spine. X.X – ¶:»)

3)   Nail biting sure can be a hard habit to kick. Here are some things that you might want to try:

Purchase a bitter-tasting formula that was made especially for nail-biters.

Ask others to tell you when you are biting your nails. Your friends can catch things when you can’t, and this just may kick the habit!

Keep your nails polished. When I was younger, I used to bite my nails. To keep from biting them, I kept them painted. Keeping them pretty kept me from wanted to bite them and mess them up, and some of the nail polish formulas can have a harsh or bitter taste to them.

Pick at least one nail to "protect" at a time. Once you realize what a non-bitten nail looks and feels like, this may just be the motivation that kicks the entire habit! And it keeps you from quitting cold turkey, which can be stressful and hard to do.

Question 4
throat feels tight…?…  not sure why but if feels really tight. You know when you have a sweat shirt on and it can feel tight/choking feeling? Yeah thats how it feels. I’m not allergic to anything. I’ve been stressing out. i don’t have a sore throat and it doesn’t look swollen or anything. Why does it feel this way?

Answers
1)   STRESS DOEs all kinds of things to your body even making your throat feel tight. my friend at church says the same thing happened to her, that her stress gave her a choking feeling in her throat and her doctor told her its stress related. so relax a little. :-)Serious

2)   Yeah, relax and hope it goes away. Lots of luck on that one. Or you could release the muscle under your chin which when tight also tightens up the passageway in your throat so you get the feeling you are having. Here is how you can release that muscle to open things back up some:

Chin Muscle:

Place your thumbs under your chin near the front and press up and hold that pressure. After 30 seconds slowly raise your head until your neck is fully extended, release the pressure but hold your head there for another 30 seconds. – Douglas B

I kinda have been having diffrent things happen to me like Bruxism bout a month er two ago and Transient Insomnia 2weeks ago and now this soo im getting kinda pissed off. And i dont know what to do. Answers
1)   You have a muscle pinched in your back that is causing this pain for you. The reason it hurts more at times is how much pressure is being applied to that area. Here is how you can release those muscles which would be causing this pain for you so you won’t need to do anything else, for once it’s released it should be good for a while:

Back:

(do from a sitting position)

Place your left hand on your left leg next to your body. Place your right hand over your left shoulder and find the muscles next to your spine and press on them and hold. After 30 seconds slowly lower your body forward and to the outside of your left leg, keeping your left arm fairly straight as you do. When you reach your lap remain there for another 10 seconds, release the pressure but rest there for another 30 seconds. Then reverse your hand positions and do your right side. – Douglas B

Last night for no reason, my left wrist started hurting. It hurts bad when I try to pick anything up?

Question 1
Last night for no reason, my left wrist started hurting. It hurts bad when I try to pick anything up?…  I did not injure my wrist in any way. It just started aching a little last night. This morning it is very sore and I cannot grip anything. I am typing with it now and it hurts a little, but when I move my hand to the left it is very painful.

Answers
1)   u probably just twisted it happens to everyone – Ahmed A

2)   If you’ve ever broken the bone, then bad weather could cause the bone to hurt and ache. Happens to me all the time. – Eclipse

3)   This may sound strange, but you may have only stressed your wrist. I went to the doctor with the same symptoms, and the only strenuous wrist activity I had done that day was straighten my hair. He told me that I had overworked my wrist.

Buy a wrist brace, and wear it for a couple of days (sleep in it as well). The brace is rather uncomfortable, but it will keep you from using/bending your wrist.

If it’s not better after a couple of days of wearing the brace, you should see your doctor. – roysecity_chick

4)   The pain is caused by the wrist itself, by having a tendon or ligaments tighten up on you pulling the bones together. You can buy a brace for it and hope that the immobilization you give it finally works or you can release the tendons/ligaments and get relief right now. Here is how to release your wrist to get rid of this pain:

Wrist:

With hand resting in front of you and your wrist bent half way closed, press down hard slightly behind the wrist and hold that pressure. After 30 seconds slowly open your wrist up as far as you can, release the pressure but hold your wrist open for another 30 seconds. – Douglas B

5)   The obvious reason for carpel tunnel and weak muscles is magnesium deficiency. There are different kinds of magnesium and I take one with magnesium malate in it.

The unobvious reason for this kind of problem is our diets. We eat too much sugar, coffee, processed foods and our bodies are always bombarded with free radicals from just processing our foods. But when we eat wrong foods and are around a lot of toxins (in the air, water, foods, chemicals) we even have more free radicals. Free radicals cause oxidative stress and oxidative stress is responsible for our cells not being able to receive all the nutrients we need including minerals and trace minerals. When we become deficient, we become sick.

Getting oxidative stress off of our cells is the key to being healthy from the inside out.

Hope this helps. – Sans

my ear is bleeding please help?…  Hi,

I just woke up and had a shower, after the shower, I stick a Qtip in my left ear and found a blotch of blood on it, it looks as if it’s from the side walls of the ear canal and not the bottom, could you tell me what it is and if I should go to a doctor??

2)   Probably just a pimple. I wouldn’t worry about it unless your hearing is impaired or you have other symptoms, like pain. – BlackSunshine84

3)   its nothing to worry about, you might just have a little cut in your ear somewhere. but if you think its serious than just a little cut, then go to the doctors. – Sweet

4)   That’s why they say don’t put anything smaller than your elbow in your ear. That said, (i use cue tips too) perhaps you were a little too aggressive with the cue tip, perhaps you weren’t paying attention enough, rushing to get dressed. Poked you tympanic membrane and started a bleed, may have dislodged a sucking parasite that had crawled into your ear, or disturbed a pimple. A blotch of blood on a cue-tip wouldn’t concern me much unless it continues. Check to make sure no parasite has taken up residence there. – Terry

Question 3
Wife’s mystery diagnoses and pain killer use is draining and things are not getting better. Should I leave?…  My wife and I have been married for 6 years this last February. She was of sound health when we married and her depression was under control. I’ve been diagnosed with a schizo effective disorder and used to be medicated for it but have been off meds going on 6 years now. I am stable but have an evolved anger problem. We both don’t work. We have a son turning 5 next month and he has been diagnosed with CAH. Going on 4 years now my wife has developed a backpain problem that is continually getting worse. She takes MS-Contin, Diladid, and Muscle Relaxers. We moved away from family to get a bit closer to doctors. I’m having a hard time getting along with my son these days. My wife is usually behind a closed door that our son cannot open it without assistance. He will be with me for most of the duration of the day until we have at each other and he’s let into the the bedroom where we both get temporary relief from one another. I get called back in shortly after to remove him so she can go back to sleep.

I’ve had to be the bad guy in all the disciplining of our son. Ive had to be the one that’s had to drag him out of the bedroom the past 2 years because she can’t have him in there.

I’ve been having a hard time coping lately. I either wake up to my wife calling my name above my head saying I need to go lay down in the morning or my son terrorizing the Apt. There really is no "family" time. I’ve started to develop somewhat of a hatred towards my wife that has begun to rub off on my child. I don’t hate either of them but I feel a fire every day because I know it will be a repeat from the day prior. I feel regrets for ever getting into this mess. I never had aggressive or anger in me before we met and over the past couple of years it feels as if I were put in a corner.

My son is becoming unmanageable. I don’t beat him but he gets three from time to time. He doesn’t like it and either do I. I could probably use the help of someone to talk to but I honestly don’t think that will change what’s happening here in our home. I’d like to leave. My mother could assist me until I get into a routine with my son. I could use a much needed break. I left about a month ago for a week. It was the first time break I’ve gotten since my son was born. I came back to an utter disaster in the apartment and the same kitty litter on the floor that was thrown at me by our son when I left and the same scenario is here still.

Am I an enabler. I don’t see health issues getting better. back pains just the worst of it. She always has something else wrong with her too whether it be migraines or hip pain or whatever. I’m LDS not that that makes a difference. I haven’t really wanted to even go. The life seems to get sucked right out of me within a day and I look at my situation and ask myself what’s it all for. I have no real motivation from her to even want to continue this. This is all in a nutshell. To me it is worst case scenario. I wake up angry because I’m still dealing with the day before. I know anger is not a valid excuse for divorce but I honestly don’t think it’s the fuse to all of this.

Can anyone give criticism that could be helpful? Thank you.

Answers
1)   Im sorry for everything your going through. i would suggest you talk to her. May not be fun but should be done. If it isn’t healthy for you two to be together esp with your child then you separate. I have a 5 year old and he is omg a little firecracker some times he is the cutest little angel some moments he is the spawn from satan and i always have to be the bad guy… im a single parent… i think asking for help from family is what you need give you a break for a bit to just do whatever u want to breath. I dont know about finances but maybe putting him in daycare or k4 would help =D alot of time when no one works they dont have a schedule and structure.I also suggest a support group for single parents. I know you are married but it seems you feel like a single parent but its a good place to vent and get good advice from people that can relate. – Bittersweetlife

2)   Sometimes the best thing to do is talk about it with a neutral party. In my opinion, you should not be asking complete strangers whether you should leave your wife or not. You made a commitment till death do you part, for better or worse. You should do everything in your power to make your marriage and family work.

The neutral party you should seek is a family counselor, or a marriage counselor. Counselors can help you and your wife understand what each other are going through, and help you save your family. – roysecity_chick

3)   All your symptoms, the depression, muscle pains, are signs of magnesium deficiency. It may not be all the problem but it sounds like the major problem.

You need different magnesiums because they do different things. I would take a magnesium that has at least 3 different kinds in it. Malate is one that I would look into. You need to be taking magnesium and your wife and your son. Your wife may need to take some in the morning and during the day. You need to take some at least in the morning and at night and possibly during the day. When your muscles start hurting, take more. You will need much more than what is recommended on the bottle.

All minerals are important so you all may need to take the major minerals plus trace minerals.

Check out oxidative stress as well. Really. Oxidative stress is the cause for over 300 diseases. When you get that under control then your body can actually absorb more nutrients and minerals and with this stress off of your cells, your body can heal. I’m going to give you some sights to look up. Look them all up and get a better understanding of why you are having these problems. Get all of you healthy and you will have your family back. – Sans

4)   One thing you should be doing is getting your wife better so she can become a part of the family again. And it is possible to get rid of those pains she is having, I have been through it myself and finally found how to do it. The muscles are pinched and that is what is giving her the pain and she will continue to be in pain as long as the muscles aren’t released. Here is how to release the muscles in her back and neck, the two main places you mentioned:

Neck

Put your hands alongside your head so your thumbs are on the front of the muscle under your ear and your fingers are on the back of the muscle behind your head. Squeeze your thumb and fingers together and hold. Relax your body. After 45 seconds, slowly lower your head as far as you can, release the pressure but hold your neck lowered for another 30 seconds.

With your neck in the lowered position, replace your thumbs in under the ears and your fingers behind your head but right next to your skull this time. Press your fingers and thumbs together again and hold. Relax your body while waiting. When the muscles have all released, slowly lift your head until it’s level again, release the pressure but hold your head like that for another 30 seconds.

Then reverse your hand positions and do your right side – Douglas B

Question 4
I have TMJ, my jaw seems to hurt worse after exercising. Has anyone felt the same? Why is this?…  Is this common? What can I do to ease the pain?

Some days I can barely open my jaw, maybe I’m clenching my teeth while exercising making my TMJ worse?

Answers
1)   Yes, my jaw pain is while i’m exercising….mainly went i ride a bike up the hill…had to do it every day for 5 years to go to school! Not really sure why, maybe i clenched my jaw unknowingly? yeah well i don’t like riding up hills lol – ƦєdAиgєℓ

2)   I think most of our American women are magnesium deficient and that causes so many symptoms. That could be a reason for your TMJ and also if your feet turn inward, that gets your skeletal system off and can end up with the pain in your jaw with TMJ. That is what happened to me and I have to wear orthodics.

And, both of these might add to the problem. Check out the sources.

Hope this helps.

"There are number of conditions that have been linked to magnesium deficiencies and have also been found to be more common among women. These conditions include:

TMJ (90% of those seeking treatment are women in their child bearing years)" (See source below) – Sans

3)   The clenching would make it worse, yes. But you don’t have to be in pain from this at all in the first place. The muscles in the back of your jaw have tightened up and need to be released to get rid of the pain. Here is how to rid yourself of the TMJ syndrome:

Jaw muscles, TMJ:

Put your fingers on your head so your thumbs are behind your ears. Press into the back of your jaw next to the skull and hold that pressure. After 30 seconds slowly raise your head until your neck is fully extended then open your mouth as far as you can. Release the pressure but hold your head and mouth like that for another 30 seconds. – Douglas B

3)   Bring your knee up to your chest or stomach and then straighten your leg out over and over, but don’t do it real hard. – lemondrop

4)   If your knee is giving you a lot of pain it is more than likely caused by the tendon for your kneecap shortening up, pulling the kneecap up on and into your knee which will make it hard and painful to bend your knee. You have to release the tendon to get it to go back to where it belongs and the pain will also go at the same time. Here is how to release your tendon for your kneecap:

Kneecaps:

Do while sitting on a chair with no front cross braces.

While sitting have your leg resting in a stretched mode. Place both your thumbs, side by side, about 2 inches behind the kneecap and press down into your leg and then redirect the pressure a little towards the kneecap. After 30 seconds, slowly slide your foot back and under your chair as far as it will go, release the pressure but hold your foot there for another 30 seconds.

The important part of this is the pressure on your leg, if there isn’t enough there this won’t take. If you have that problem give it another try right away. – Douglas B

3)   Nope, it doesn’t hurt a bit. The cervix has little to no feeling at all, otherwise nobody would have a baby. The worst of the entire pap smear is the so graceful position you get to take up, and sometimes the poking around. When the doctor inserts the speculum, if you get all wired up and tighten up the vaginal canal muscles, it can certainly not feel great. And if you don’t empty your bladder before the exam. all the pushing and pressing won’t feel good. But it isn’t painful- just rather humbling. When you go for the exam, be sure to tell the nurse and doctor it’s your very first ever pap smear. They will coax you through it all, no problem. It’s not the most pleasant exam going, it’s in the same line as the dental cleaning. But at least you don’t get a floss lecture, and it’s only once a year. Wear socks – at least your feet will stay warm. Wear comfy clothes that go off and on quickly, and don’t get too keyed up. It doesn’t hurt, and you will do fine. Good luck! – The mom

I’m 14 and don’t have a sinus problem, although i do wear contact lenses. But even when i take off my contacts my eyes still hurt.

At the moment I also have a cold and muscle pains, but my headache and eye pain hasn’t gone away in a couple of days.

Does anyone know what this is, or what i should do? Please, i’m really worried.

Answers
1)   I would recommend talking to your eye doctor if possible. You might need a new prescription. Or it’s possible your nerves are just fried and they’ll stop hurting on their own after a while. – Colleen

2)   Headaches aren’t really a family thing which you will soon see, they are caused by tight muscles in your neck and once they are released the headaches will also go. The pain on your eyes is something I am also aware of, had it myself and ran to the dr.’s and they eye dr. but always checked out fine. Finally found out that the pain was caused by the tight muscles in my neck pressing against the nerves for they eyes as they passed along them on their way to the back of the head where the eye center is located. You may have to do the release on them a few times to get the desired amount of relief but they are easy to do. Here is how to release the muscles in your neck:

I did do that a few time and have found out that now if I feel my head tightening up meaning a headaches is coming on I can push my fingers into my temples and hold the pressure there for 30 to 45 seconds, until the pressure has passed and that this works pretty well to ward the headaches off. – Douglas B

3)   I would suggest to see an ophthalmologist and pain menagement specialist if pain persists.

This is a very sensistive area and the cause of the pain can come from several sources. – Eduard Burt, D.C., MUAC

2)   you should go to the same doctor and tell him what happens at night. and if he still doesnt do anything go to a different doctor. ou rather be safe then sorryv so dont ignore it – konata

3)   You should find a specialist that will break down fibrotic tissue in your wrist. Massage therapist will be able to do the job. It will be painful but there is no other way to fix it. You can also ask a member of your family perform a deep massage in the area of concern for at least 8-12 weeks.

This is the plan:

3 times a week for 4 weeks

2 times a week for another 4 weeks

1 time a week for another 4 weeks.

By doing it you wall break down the calcification and macrophage will eat it.

Each procedure should not be longer than 10-15 minutes. Your wrist will be inflamed after this procedure. Use ice to keep it the inflammation down for 15 minutes. – Eduard Burt, D.C., MUAC

Question 3
How to help relieve/prevent sore muscles?…  I started working for a moving company yesterday. To be honest with you it’s probably the hardest job I’ve ever had. But anyways, I woke up today and I’m sore as hell, and my damn foot keeps cramping up repeatedly. No OTC pain reliever has worked. How can I relieve my muscles, like all of them lol.

Answers
1)   I know this will sound funny, but you can get your muscles to recover better if you get your oxidative stress under control.

As a child you did not get as sore did you? But as you got older so did soreness when moving your muscles and pain occurs.

There are 29 studies done by medical universities and independent medical institutions on muscle soreness. I mean muscle soreness and oxidative stress. You see oxidative stress is the cause for over 300 diseases/symptoms.

So find out how to control oxidative stress and you will have your answer. – Sans

2)   The easiest and one of the most effective things to do is just to drink plenty of water; hydrating your muscles speeds their repair. You also need to give your body time to repair itself. If your new job is going to subject your body to that kind of abuse every day, then be sure your lifting techniques are sound and won’t contribute to any additional muscle strain.

Does Red Wine Protect the Cardiovascular System?

The ‘French paradox’ rears its ugly head again. The reasoning goes something like this: French people eat more saturated animal fat than any other affluent nation, and have the second-lowest rate of coronary heart disease (only after Japan, which has a much higher stroke rate than France). French people drink red wine. Therefore, red wine must be protecting them against the artery-clogging yogurt, beef and butter.

The latest study to fall into this myth was published in the AJCN recently (1). Investigators showed that 1/3 bottle of red wine per day for 21 days increased blood flow in forearm vessels of healthy volunteers, which they interpreted as “enhanced vascular endothelial function”*. The novel finding in this paper is that red wine consumption increases the migration of certain cells into blood vessels that are thought to maintain and repair the vessels. There were no control groups for comparison, neither abstainers nor a group drinking a different type of alcohol.

The investigators then went on to speculate that the various antioxidant polyphenols in red wine, such as the trendy molecule resveratrol, could be involved. Even though you have to give animals 500 bottles’ worth of resveratrol per day to see any effect. But there’s another little problem with this hypothesis…

Ethanol– plain old alcohol. You could drink a 40 oz bottle of malt liquor every night and it would probably do the exact same thing.

No matter what the source, alcohol consumption is associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease out to about 3-4 drinks per day, after which the risk goes back up (2, 3)**. The association is not trivial– up to a 62% lower risk associated with alcohol use. Controlled trials have shown that alcohol, regardless of the source, increases HDL cholesterol and reduces the tendency to clot (4).

Should we all start downing three drinks a day? Not so fast. Although alcohol does probably decrease heart attack risk, the effect on total mortality is equivocal. That’s because it increases the risk of cancers and accidents. Alcohol is a drug, and my opinion is that like all drugs, overall it will not benefit the health of a person with an otherwise good diet and lifestyle. That being said, it’s enjoyable, so I have no problem with drinking it in moderation. Just don’t think you’re doing it for your health.

So does red wine decrease the risk of having a heart attack? Yes, just as effectively as malt liquor. It’s not the antioxidants and resveratrol, it’s the ethanol. The reason the French avoid heart attacks is not because of some fancy compound in their wine that protects them from a high saturated fat intake. It’s because they have preserved their diet traditions to a greater degree than most industrialized nations.

I do think it’s interesting to speculate about why alcohol (probably) reduces heart attack risk. As far as I know, the mechanism is unknown. Could it be because it relaxes us? I’m going to ponder that over a glass of whiskey…

* It may well represent an improvement of endothelial function, but that’s an assumption on the part of the investigators. It belongs in the discussion section, if anywhere, and not in the results section.

** The first study is really interesting. For once, I see no evidence of “healthy user bias”. Rates of healthy behaviors were virtually identical across quintiles of alcohol intake. This gives me a much higher degree of confidence in the results.

I fell on my wrist while ice-skating yesterday, everything i do with my hand hurts, what is wrong with it?

Question 1
I fell on my wrist while ice-skating yesterday, everything i do with my hand hurts, what is wrong with it?…  when i swivel my wrist it hurts in the tendons and in the joint. also, i can’t out any weight on it. I also can’t play the piano without pain.

Answers
1)   Ice it and go to the doc if it hurts that bad – Bob

2)   um. first you should go the damn hospital.

and you probably sprained it or broke it…-_-;; – Maria

3)   It might be broken. Put ice on it and go to the emergency. Good luck :)

4)   You may have fractured or sprained your hand. Please see a doctor or go to the hospital. They may put a splint (a temporary cast) on your hand. Try not to move your hand. – Simple Minded

5)   At the best case, you may have some bruising in/around your wrist or on the muscles. At the worst case, you could have cartilage damage or you could have fractures on the small bones in the wrist. To fully determine the extent of your injury you should seek medical attention. – tchicken13

6)   You jammed it and have a slight sprain in it which means the tendons tightened up on you and are making the muscle shorter than it should be and icing it will try to shorten it some more and end up being more painful in the end. You can release your sprained muscle in your wrist and the pain and swelling should go as soon as you are done with that. Here is how to release it:

Wrist:

With hand resting in front of you and your wrist bent half way closed, press down hard slightly behind the wrist and hold that pressure. After 30 seconds slowly open your wrist up as far as you can, release the pressure but hold your wrist open for another 30 seconds. – Douglas B

7)   Could be a sprain or a hair line fracture. Soak in warm water with Epsom’s mineral salts. It may take 4-5 days to get back to normal. Take it easy on that hand a few days. If it takes longer consult a doctor about it. – Hodmimir Woods

8)   You are going to have to give it time to heal. Be patient. The body is good to heal if we give it a chance. – Sans

Question 2
Is my appendix about to burst or in bad condition?…  My lower right stomach has been hurting recently. I have not been feeling well with some minor head aches. My lower back hurts too but i believe that is from hockey. Please respond!

Answers
1)   No way to tell from your description. Appendicitis is extremely painful. I mean horribly so. It hurts bad, you puke, you have a fever and it hurts when you press your stomach. If you don’t have these symptoms, dont’ fret. – SethSpeaks

2)   Not necessarily but definitely worth getting checked out. If it is your appendix it will not go away on it’s own. It will gradually get worse and worse to the point that you can barely walk. Go to the doctor or at very least give your doctor or nurse line a call. – jayden11805

3)   If the pain is from your appendix, and you need surgery, you won’t have time to clean out your internal organs. If it is not your appendix, you should have time to clean them out. The best way is to clean out the oxidative stress on your cells. Free radicals cause oxidative stress and oxidative stress causes over 300 diseases and sicknesses. If your appendix is inflammed, then you need to get your oxidative stress under control. There is lots of studies on how to do this. – Sans

4)   ok bro, this is brutal, i know you were planning to wait til you were 40 or 50 or 60 before the DR pulled the latex glove on and asked to lay on you side and relax while the DR explores an exit only orafice.

so if you have a really cool wife, have her check you out- the already excrutiating pain will intensify greatly when she pushes out to one side ( don t remember which one- she will have to push out all the way around )

usually if you can walk normally, you probably did not burst the appendix

with the lower back pain and the stomach aches it sound like you are a little full, ease up on the red meat and try to flush your system, like a 2 stroke engine needs oil in the fuel, you need some vegetables to process that meat.

are you keeping yourself properly hydrated- water and lemonade

if this continues go see the DR – joeman

I’ve had a dull pumping headache for about 4 days now…?…  well today i woke up and my neck was really stiff so i rolled my shoulders and my neck made a clicking or cracking sound (not loud at all just like a slow cracking) and all day today i cant move my neck its completly stuck when i move it i yelp its so frustrating and i want to know if anyone has felt this way before? what can i do to relax it (yes ive tried otc pain relief meds-motrin tylenol exedrin bengay- and hot showers) they lend temporary relief (30min to 1 hpour) then the pain is back two-fold also does anyone think this could be a serious situation? what causes should be considered? plz help

1)   The headache sounds as if it is being caused by brain swelling. Your neck, I’m not sure. Either go to a walk-in clinic, or to the ER. From the sounds of it, this problem is most likely way out of your control, so go get some help. – Mitch

2)   I’ve been hearing a lot of friends and co-workers complain of stiff neck and lower back pain. This is allergy season so this may be the reason. I had a stiff neck for 2 days then it was gone. A friend’s lasted for 3 weeks.

Also look up chem trails.

Oxidative stress is the cause for pain and inflammation as well as allergies. – Sans

3)   Your headache and the problem of not being able to turn your neck are both caused by the same problem, tight muscles in your neck. Once they are released the headache will be gone and you will be able to turn your head as well. Here is how to release your neck muscles:

Question 4
Ripping pain in area around right ovary or appendix when coughing?…  I’ve had a cold for about 2 weeks now and about a week ago, at night, I would fell a ripping pain in my right ovary (I think) when I coughed. It worsened as I coughed more. This would happen almost every night. Then today when I woke up coughing the pain was there again but it started off strong and when I tried to get up it was still hurting. It also now hurts when I walk, move, cough, sneeze, etc. The pain is quite severe but definitely bare able, and is next to my right hip bone. Does anyone know if this is my appendix or ovary and what is causing it?

Answers
1)   Well I am a male and have had my appendix taken out.

If it is the case that your appendix is inflamed then you would be puking up everything you eat and the pain wouldn’t be bearable…Like I said I am a male I’m not quite sure about the ovaries.. – Chris

2)   Could be an ovarian cyst…go to your doc and he/she will send you for a sonogram. Best to get it checked out because it could be a problem if it is a cyst and it ruptures. It could also be your appendix since that is on the right side. Don’t take any chances and see your doc asap. – Ann E

3)   When we are in bed and cough or sneeze we are likely to get a muscle pinched in our backs and those muscles can either be transferring pain around the body or it can be the pain itself. When pinched in the back it can make it harder to walk because when you stand up all the weight is on the area that is pinched. Here is how you can release those muscles which would cause the problems:

– Douglas B

It’s not near the navel, but it’s more toward the side of my body and I have this icy feeling spreading around the area. I thought of appendicitis, but the symptoms for that are worse, like nausea and fever, both of which I don’t have, so I’m not sure what’s wrong with me. Please help!

2)   Are you a female? Do you eat soy? If so stop eating it and it should clear up in about a week. Soy has a lot of natural estrogen and when our cells are overloaded with estrogen the ovaries will hurt. Only gets worse. It takes about a week to clear out the estrogen after stopping the soy.

This happened to me and my right side hurt for 4 months and it spread to my left side as well. Not quite as bad as appendicitis but hurt just the same.

I wish you would have given more information. – Sans

3)   Go to the doc that sounds serious. – Bob

4)   i had appendicitis with NO fever, NO nausea, and a NORMAL white blood cell count. they found it with UltraSound. if you’ve had the pain for a while now, you should probably go to emergency. best wishes. – moomie

Question 3
I think I’ve torn my left thigh muscle, but how do I tell?…  My friend and I were dicking around yesterday and climbing some trees, I lost my grip and fell from about 13 feet up, hit a ravine edge and was unconscious for a few seconds at most. The first thing I recall when waking up, besides that I was screaming, was that I had a horrible, agonizing pain in my left thigh. I couldn’t actually move my left leg for a few seconds and then I was able to get up, but not without a whole lot of pain. I kind of hobbled inside – I had a bit of an adrenaline rush going, I think, because I felt somewhat numb to the pain.

I can walk on the leg, but its painful. It sends a sharp, almost burning sensation up my hip and down to my knee. Its the top of my thigh, and I can’t bend my knee more than 20 degrees before the pain ricochets down and up the rest of my leg. Its bad enough to tear a half-sob out of me before I can stop it. I know the bone isn’t broken – thank god I have such a strong bone structure – but I think I may have torn something in the thigh itself. I can’t stand up or sit down without a heap of pain and sometimes it takes me two or three attempts before I can position my leg enough that its tolerable to sit/stand. If I want to prop my leg up on a chair or something, I have to lift it with my hands and straighten it out because it hurts so much.

I hope this is enough detail to help figure out what’s wrong.

5)   You could have actually fractured your femur, not a complete break, but a fracture. It takes quite a bit of force to fracture your femur, but falling 13 feet out of a tree, could very well do it.

You could also have a torn muscle or just deep, painful bruising.

I would really go to a doctor, and first have an x-ray to make sure you don’t have a fracture, since you actually have no way of knowing it isn’t fractured.

Unfortunately, it is not enough to figure it out. Torn muscles, sprains, fractures (not complete breaks) can all mimick each other and give off the same symptoms and same kind of pain. You will not know for certain unless you visit a doctor. Also, if you’re in that much pain, the doctor can give you medication, so you aren’t constantly hurting.

If you refuse to visit a doctor…Ice the leg, 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off, and take ibuprofen for pain and inflammation.

Good luck. – Spunky

6)   I do NOT usually recommend this, but you should go to the emergency room. Any time you get knocked unconscious for even a second, that could mean a serious concussion. – MagnusMoss

Any of these symptoms accompanied with this pain, especially if you are a woman or diabetic (myocardial infarction presents atypically in this subsect) should prompt you to seek the attention of a physician. Chest pain from an MI can occur on either side. If you are concerned, I would urge you to see immediate medical attention.

If I had to guess though, and that’s the best I can do with the information you’ve provided, it sounds like angina decubitus, a form of chest pain brought on by the heart working harder from blood redistribution. When you lie flat, the fluid in your lower extremities returns to your heart and it sees more blood, causing it to work harder. This can cause pain. When you sit up, the blood to the heart decreases and it becomes easier to pump the blood and it doesn’t back up to the lungs causing shortness of breath. The cyclical nature could be due to dietary changes, such as high salt intake every few weeks. Salt causes people to retain fluid, which causes increased blood volume.

Question 3
Severe pain after ankle sprain?…  I sprained my ankle last wednesday morning (9 days ago). I got an xray day one and although the medical personnel seemed incompetent at the urgent care I went to, they said no break. The first couple of days I literally crawled around. The next couple it felt a little better and I even got around a sporting goods store using the cart. A couple of days after that,,,it got nothing but worse. Whenever my foot is not elevated it feels like actual fire is pumping through the veins on my outer ankle. My mobility is so bad I cannot evn simply have my foot in the air without being in a brace because even gravity hurts it. I cannot touch it with my fingers- or let it hit the floor or I will literally scream in agony. I went back to my family doctor a couple of days ago. He put it in a walking cast/boot and I have worn that for 48 hours non stop. No improvement…even worse I think. I took the cast off and the outer ankle is swollen in the shape of a star and bright red. The rest of the foot is yellow green black purple etc.. The foot is also having involuntary muscle spasms in the toes and the side that did not sustain the significant damage (inside ankle). The worst part is that because I can’t put the foot down- even in the boot, it is like my ankle has to carry around the heavy boot. The doc wanted me to leave the boot on for 72 hours non stop. Do I need to see a specialist?

Answers
1)   your suppose to wear the cast for waaay longer than 72 hours or whatever. If anything your forcing it to heal. Like how you said you walked around on it with the shopping cart? That’s too soon and according to ur symptoms it sounds like a verry bad sprain that will take ALOT of time to heal. Relax and wear that cast for way more that 48 hours. A couple of days or weeks at best. By walking around and trying to stand on it is only irritating it and making it much worse. Put the cast on and use cruches so you won’t have to stand on it and you’d have the cruches for support.

avoid putting any kind of pressure on it what-so-ever because if you do it just delays the healing time. – miniecooper

2)   Okay, you likely need an orthopedist, and if possible in the next 24 hours, or I’d suggest taking a run to the ER. The discoloration is bruising and blood collecting. The rules are RICE, rest, ice, compression, elevation. And you shouldn’t have taken the boot off, you should have stopped walking and put the leg up. You can’t make these decisions on your own and should be calling the doctors, not asking us here. Don’t mean to get testy, but I don’t understand why you aren’t following medical advice and not calling them when you have a problem. They can make a better call than we can, even if we have medical training, we can’t see the foot or the x-rays. You don’t get immediate improvement from a serious injury, it can sometimes be more painful in the first two weeks than when you first hurt it. The healing process can be as painful and when you are using the body part you are walking on something that is injured so of course it is going to hurt. You need to get off that foot immediately, and don’t walk on it – if that means hopping, then do that. If someone has a cane or crutches you can use, do it. Call the doctor as soon as you can, and whichever one you call tell them how much worse it is and ask if they can refer you to a specialist. AND, get your hands on those x-rays. Somebody should have another look at them. They will probably want to do an MRI to have a look at the soft tissue. And know this, whether a break or torn ligament, or sprain – a bad sprain can be significantly worse than a break. Soft tissue injuries just don’t heal the same way a break does – it remains damaged tissue – kind of like getting a tear in your pants, you can sew it back up but the fabric is still damaged. – Grace

3)   you need to go to an actual emergency room and get another xray. either its broken or theres some other kind of damage. sprains hurt bad but those symptoms are not good

Question 5
help meee!!! chest hurts?…  i smoked weed about 2 weeks ago , and i did it wrong so now my chest hurts!! i dont have any asthma or anything and yes i know its bad blablabal i know, it was just weed. but im wondering why does it hurt? will this go away? theres no trouble for breathing but it just feels like my chest is kinda tight, idk whats going on. i dont want to go to the doctor becuase its not like killing me or super serious. what do i do?? if my parents find out il get kicked out of my school , and its a religious school!!!!!
oh yeah, im also over reating but, is it possible to have cancer? my grandma died of brest cancer, and my grandpa from my dads side has it. :( im scared

Answers
1)   Umm.. perhaps you should just face up to what you did and go to the doctor. Also, it may not be the weed since it was two weeks ago so you probably don’t have much to worry about.

And hey, if its a good religious school and it’s not full of fanatics, they should forgive you if you say that you’re sorry! – Knowledge Seeker

2)   It sounds like guilt manifested physically for what you perceive is a bad deed. Just get over it, confess or don’t, it’s up to you. – Roger

3)   First of all, how did you smoke it wrong?

Since its already been two weeks I’d say the chest pain is probably not related to the weed at all, and something else might be causing it. Give it a few days and if it keeps up get it checked out.

Above all, don’t panic! :)Sarah

Scared about going in hospital?

Question 1
Scared about going in hospital?…  I had an ultrasound a week ago and they found "something" in my bladder, now I have to go back to a specialist to have a camera in my bladder next week, which is gonna hurt :( & I’ve no idea what I might have, or if I’ll need an operation.

I’m SO scared.

If I think about it I panic and sweat and start to cry ( I know that sounds so wimpy )

But I can’t help it & I can’t stop thinking about it.

I don’t want to look stupid crying in the hospital, what could I do to try calm myself? :(
Thanks everyone, does anyone have any idea what it could be?

Symptoms: UTI’s a lot & bad pain in my left side for about a week.

But it’s something in my bladder.

1)   Apprehension is a natural feeling to have, you just have to think about that whatever they do to you is to help your health. – The Impossible Cube 2

2)   Talk to your doctor, explain your worries and get them to talk you through the whole procedure so that you understand it fully. And try and find out what the implications might be – though they may not be happy guessing at this stage.

Try some Bach’s Rescue Remedy from the chemist. It helped me recently. It’s not prescription, it’s all plant extracts and anyone can take it and you can’t overdose. But it does work. – shortbread

3)   dont be afraid many thousands of people have this done every year / they will give a local anaesthetic & it will be quite painless. – ( JS )

4)   Call the specialist and tell him your so anxious you may not be able to go through with the procedure. Tell him what has you so scared. Ask him questions.Have him tell you exactly what will happen, step by step and ask him what he’s looking for. You have the right to know , it’s your body after all.

He may prescribe a little medicine for you to help with your anxious feeling, and make sure you talk to the person performing the sonogram. Many people have so much fear and as a rule, I find it’s because they need more information. Everyone fears the unknown! You are not alone, or wimpy. In fact shame on your Dr. for not giving you more info, and asking if you had questions.

remember, it’s YOUR health care. You’re paying them, they’re not paying you so ask away. Best of luck. I suggest you take someone along to hold your hand. You’d be surprised how much that helps. – LPnerd

5)   go to the hospital and get them to explain every detail so you are aware of whats going to happen, it wont calm you down completely but knowing what is going on helps a lot. – Shan

6)   I really dislike the hospital too even when I am visiting someone else there I am always on the verge of a panic attack (now that is wimpy). So one day when I had to get stitches on my leg (20 stitches) I was hyperventilating before I even left the house because I knew that I had to go to a doctor. My older sister gave me my pillow (which I clung to) and brought along my rubber chicken. It seems silly but having things from home that you are familiar with helps calm you down. Since I was clinging to my pillow I felt a bit safer because it was soft and warm it also smelt like home (more specifically my room) so my thoughts were on my room and not on my bleeding arm or the creepy hospital that I was at. As for the rubber chicken it was just something else I could focus on that I was familiar with because eventually the nurse did take away my pillow because it was in the way and my rubber chicken was a lot smaller.

My sister is a child psychologist and she figured that when a person is afraid they revert to their basic child instincts of wanting comfort and familiarity and she used it on me ~ I was 17 at the time. So if you have anything from your house that you could take along to hold onto and focus on like a small blanket, a toy or plushy animal, pillow or even a family picture I would highly recommend it. – Ello
