A Natural Cholesterol Solution

Amla Matters

It’s an all too common story. A patient walks into his doctor’s office. He sits down with his doctor to review the blood work from his most recent physical exam and he’s given the following speech:

“Your cholesterol is too high. I’d like you to start taking a cholesterol-lowering medication.”

But, what you’re unlikely to hear from your doctor is this: “Your cholesterol is too high. I could prescribe you a powerful medication with potentially dangerous side-effects to help lower your cholesterol. But, I’m not going to do that. I’d like to try something natural first. Something that’s probably a lot safer, healthier and possibly as effective or even more effective.”

Is Coffee Heart Healthy?

I was planning on writing a completely new blog today, but then I looked over my notes from yesterday’s blog and realized there was more valuable information to share. So today, I’m going to continue to dispel some common food myths. On the agenda for today is a notorious villain: coffee.

Coffee is one of the most popular drinks in the world. We drink it for its pleasurable taste and aroma. We drink it for that boost when we’re feeling sluggish. But we’ve all been told that it just isn’t very good for us. So what’s the truth about coffee? Is it a guilty pleasure? Is it a vice? Should we avoid it altogether? The truth, as is often the case, is not so black and white.

Reversing Atherosclerosis Naturally

Smile! It’s Friday!

What if I told you there was a simple “anti-aging” activity that you could do in just a couple minutes a day that would a) make your arteries and your heart healthier and b) also make you more attractive? It sounds like a cheesy infomercial for a supercharged exotic fruit juice or an ancient facial serum from the far ends of the Earth, doesn’t it? Not quite.

I’ve discussed a substance called C-reative protein (CRP) before. It’s a protein that indicates a type of inflammation that may contribute to heart disease, stroke and, possibly, even some cancers.

Three Reasons to Get More Sleep

Do you feel rested when you get up in the morning? Are the bags under your eyes heavier than the bags you take to work? Is coffee your best morning buddy? If so, you really should pay attention to what modern science is telling us about the importance of sleep. Your very health hangs in the balance.

Sleeping Enough to Live Longer

A lack of sleep is the new cigarette. An abundance of research is piling up and it doesn’t look good for those who don’t get enough shut-eye. But it’s not all bad news. There is a solution to this potential health epidemic. And it’s as easy to implement as closing your eyes and lying in bed.

A Natural Approach to Heart Disease

Many patients and doctors believe that heart disease is a progressive illness. And, to be quite frank, they have good reason to adopt that view. The vast majority of the time, heart disease does, in fact, become more severe with time. And we all know the end result. But that’s what makes the news in today’s blog very exciting. I’m going to share some evidence that shows that heart disease can possibly be halted and even reversed to some extent.

I’ve mentioned before that I’m a big fan of “integrative medicine“. This is a form of treatment that combines the best of mainstream science with the best that natural medicine has to offer. The idea is that by combining the two, we can find a synergistic effect. In other words, the combined effect is greater than the sum of its parts.

Vitamin K and Heart Disease

Did you know that cardiovascular disease is the #1 cause of death in women 25 and up? There’s not even a close second in the mortality race. You’d have to add up all the deaths from every form of cancer and multiply that number by almost two in order to equal the number of heart related deaths. Pretty shocking, isn’t it?

In today’s blog, I’d like to share some information about a little known but very valuable nutrient that may help tip the odds in your favor with regard to heart disease.

Heart Attack and Stroke Signs

In yesterday’s blog, I described one possible strategy to help reduce the risk of heart disease. My hope is that the information I present here will help keep your cardiovascular system healthy and symptom-free. But I understand very well that there are no guarantees in life.  Unfortunately, some of us will have to deal with the stark reality of a heart attack or stroke. It may happen to us personally or to someone close to us. So today, I’d like to offer a brief overview of the most common symptoms that should warn us that a heart attack or stroke is occurring.

Kiwi Fruit and Heart Disease

One of the downsides of reporting on natural health and nutrition is that you sometimes have to share bad news. Today is one of those days. I have some rather bleak news about one of the world’s most popular snacks. But, I’ll temper that information with some really good news about an exotic fruit that hopefully will become more popular very soon.

“Lays” Off the Potato Chips

Have you ever heard of a chemical called acrylamide? It’s a substance that forms when certain types of cooking methods are employed: high-temperature baking, frying and roasting. Water based cooking methods such as boiling and steaming do not contribute to the acrylamide content of food.

Not all foods form acrylamide when cooked at high temperatures. Generally speaking, vegetables and grains are most vulnerable. Dairy, fish, meat and poultry are typically not considered a major source of this substance.

Fish Oil for Heart Health

If you’re a man who’s interested in keeping your cardiovascular system healthy, you’ll probably want to take today’s blog to heart. It doesn’t matter if you’ve already been diagnosed with heart disease or you just hope to avoid such a diagnosis in the future. Fish oil is a powerful tool that you can use at any stage of the heart health continuum.

Omega-3 for You and Me

A key principle of the scientific method is the replication of results. One study may show a positive effect, but that generally doesn’t impress scientists very much. They want to see whether the conclusions of one study can be consistently demonstrated in other similar experiments. If that is achieved, then the results are considered noteworthy. It’s kind of like having the same or similar testimony given by several reliable witnesses in a courtroom.
