Cranberries and Flax

Ladies & Gentlemen

Today I want split up my column. One part will deal with a topic that most people associate with women’s health. The second part will focus on a decidedly male issue. But ultimately, I hope you’ll read both segments of today’s blog. We all need to help inform each other, so help me spread the word.

Nutrition Myths Exposed!

Eggciting News!

Eggs are loaded with cholesterol and saturated fat. Doctors, neighbors, pharmacists and even zoologists tell us that eggs are bad for our heart. But are they really as harmful as “they” say? And are all eggs created equal?

To find an answer to these questions, we’ll need to pay a visit to Uppsala University Hospital in Sweden. That’s where a study was recently conducted to determine whether omega-3 rich eggs would have a positive or negative effect on the heart. By the way, omega-3 fatty acids are the types of healthy fats that are found in fish and certain seeds, like flaxseeds.

The Secret Life of Olive Oil

There’s a trend in modern medicine in which natural substances are isolated and then transformed into artificial chemicals which can be tested, patented and eventually sold as prescription medications. This has become the accepted mode by which conventional medicine has chosen to incorporate nature into science. But a lesson that’s been learned time and time again is that science is often not very good at accurately replicating nature. A recent example of this is currently under development. It’s a work in progress and I’d like to give you a tour of the process. Our story picks up in Granada, Spain.

Berry Power

What’s the first thing you notice when you look at a blueberry or a cranberry or a raspberry? Our eyes usually pick up on the vibrant colors that are painted all over these seasonal fruits. And perhaps there’s a good reason why these colors draw our attention. You see, many of the health promoting substances in berries are present because of the pigments that make them so distinctive.

Stevia – The Safe and Natural Sweetener

If you’ve gone shopping lately and looked around the sweetener section, you may have seen a few new faces on the block. Products like Truvia and ZSweet are popping up all over the country and beyond. But what are they really? And are they really safe?

The Sour Side of Sweetness

Artificial sweeteners have been a regular part of the Standard American Diet for many years. These calorie-free sweeteners have names like NutraSweet, Sweet’N Low and Splenda. The supposed upside of these sweetening agents is that they’re virtually calorie-free, safe for diabetics and don’t promote weight-gain. All of these products have also been safety approved by the FDA (the Food and Drug Administration). The trouble is, if we dig a little deeper, the reality of these products don’t appear quite so appetizing.

Soy and Colorectal Cancer

In natural medicine, there is often a tendency to apply research results in too broad a fashion. In today’s blog, I want to share some encouraging news about the link between nutrition and cancer. But in addition to that, I’d like to temper those positive findings with a bit of practical information as well. Stick around and you’ll see what I mean.

A Natural Remedy for Sleep Apnea

We all know what it feels like to have a restless nights sleep. The next day we feel like we’re dragging. Our mood is lousy. We can’t think straight. It’s something we all hope to avoid. But there are many people out there that go through this process on nightly basis. One of the most common reasons for this type of destructive pattern is a condition called Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA).

Vitamin C Deficiency

It’s often difficult to notice marginal nutrient deficiencies. If you’re severely lacking in vitamins and minerals, your body will generally let you know by exhibiting a clear set of symptoms such as those found in iron-deficiency anemia, rickets (a lack of vitamin D) and scurvy (a vitamin C deficiency). But, if like many people, you’re getting just a little less than the optimal amounts of vital nutrients, your body often doesn’t give you tell-tale signs until many years have passed. By then, you may find yourself in a rather unwelcome situation.
