Question 5
Why are headaches such a pain?…  I’ve always had at least one head ache a week, but lately it’s been every day.

I already had my period at the beginning of the month. It’s summer, I get enough sleep. I drink enough liquids. I haven’t changed my diet.

Everytime I get a headache, I take 2 Moltrins. After a while of doing this, wouldn’t it have no effect on me?

Do I need to consult my doctor?

WHY AM I GETTING SO MANY?

I do get stressed a lot, I get light headed when there’s a strong scent, sometimes my pony tail is too tight..

Answers
1)   I recommend you to see —-> http://www.all-home-remedies.com

I hope that will resolve your problem, keep using answers.yahoo.com – Lisa K

2)   It is more than likely that the headaches are cervicogenic (caused by the neck)

A physical therapist can help, but before you go, do a few neck stretches with 30 second holds (up, down, left, right, tip left ear to shoulder, tip right ear to shoulder)

Seems like a lot, but this is a 3 minute treatment, which is pretty good – Ben Mcleod

3)   The reason that you are probably getting light headed is because your more sensitive when you have headaches. My guess is that they are due to stress and the Motrin you are taking now isn’t helping because you have probably used so much your body has become immune to it. Youre headaches also may contribute to lack of sleep or any major changes in weather. (which there have been alot of lately) haha Try taking vitamins and just remember to get a healthy amount of sleep Hope you feel better! – Aj Smith

4)   You are on the right track. Head aches come from

•Muscles

•Blood vessels (the arteries and veins that supply the brain, face and scalp with blood and take it away)

•Sinuses

The brain does not have nerve endings that can send pain signals. It can receive signals from other parts of the body, including the scalp and skull, but the brain itself can’t send out a pain message.

So your head aches could be caused by scents, or your pony tail too tight. You need to start being aware of what occurs immediately before your head ache. If the same stimulus is present, you will know what to avoid. – ranger_co_1_75

Are nasty people more at risk from stroke and heart attack?

People who are antagonistic, competitive and aggressive may be at greater risk of having a heart attack or stroke. Researchers from the National Institute on Aging in Baltimore studied 5,614 Italians from Sardinia who ranged in age from 14 to 94. The participants answered a standard personality questionnaire that included six facets of agreeableness: trust, straightforwardness, altruism, compliance, modesty and tender-mindedness. The researchers then measured the thickness of their carotid (neck) arteries – the thicker people’s arteries the greater their risk of stroke or heart attack. Those who scored highest for antagonistic traits had greater thickening of their neck arteries and three years later they continued to be at more risk – especially if they were manipulative and quick to express anger. Those who scored in the bottom 10% of agreeableness and were the most antagonistic had a 40% greater risk of arterial thickening. In general men had more thickening of their arterial walls than women but if women were antagonistic they had the same risk as men. The researchers also measured the participants’ blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar and used statistical tools to take these variables ‘out of the equation’ in their analysis.

You can find out more about this research by clicking on the link in the title of this post.

Question 4
Sudden Severe Neck Pain?…  I have not been in any car accidents or had any neck trauma recently.

Yesterday morning I woke up with severe neck pain. Its super stiff and very difficult to move, especially left to right and chin to chest. I am a massage therapist so I did some stretches but it didn’t help, I applied Biofreeze ( a menthol pain reliever) and had another therapist work on my neck and shoulders for about 30mins. Non of this helped and this morning I woke up and it’s worse to the point I can feel it all the way down my spine. Not sure what I should do about this…

I don’t really have the money to go to the doctor or urgent care… ideas?
Okay, just tried that and it surprisingly worked rather well. but as I sit here, I can feel the pain coming right back. I feel like every time I stretch, it helps for a second but goes right back to hurting, even if I stay resting and relaxed for a little while.

Answers
1)   Yes, you have some tight or pinched muscles in your neck and they need to be released rather than massaged. Here is how you can get rid of that pain right now:

Neck

Put your hands alongside your head so your thumbs are on the front of the muscle under your ear and your fingers are on the back of the muscle behind your head. Squeeze your thumb and fingers together and hold. Relax your body. After 45 seconds, slowly lower your head as far as you can, release the pressure but hold your neck lowered for another 30 seconds.

With your neck in the lowered position, replace your thumbs in under the ears and your fingers behind your head but right next to your skull this time. Press your fingers and thumbs together again and hold. Relax your body while waiting. When the muscles have all released, slowly lift your head until it’s level again, release the pressure but hold your head like that for another 30 seconds.

For best results relax your body first by taking a deep breath and exhaling then remain this relaxed. – Douglas B

2)   When your neck hurts there can be many things wrong with it but when it goes the whole way down your spine, there can be serious problems. This can mean the spine is being compromised. I suggest going to the E.R. – animalexpert95

3)   You should use acetylsalicylic acid, it is the best about it you can get information from here http://mdcan1.notlong.com/1AALmHz – Jackeline Profancik

Question 5
Why is it that you can’t drink water the night before an ultrasound appointment?…  I have an ultrasound appointment at 10 am and they told me I can’t drink or eat anything after midnight. The eating part I understand, but I was wondering why you also can’t drink any water?

Also, I accidentally drank some water when I woke up at 3 AM. Does that mess up my ultrasound or is it OK?

Answers
1)   It ensures your stomach and intestines are empty for optimal viewing.

As for drinking water, you’ll need to tell the doctor you see that you did drink water. They may need to reschedule your appointment at worst, but you need to be honest. – StrawberryApplesauce

2)   That’s weird. Because they told me I needed to drink water so my bladder would be full before my ultrasound. It might have to do with why you’re getting the ultrasound, maybe whatever they are looking for would be obscured by food or liquid in your organs. – Thepoorbunny

Latent Tissue Acidosis or Sympathetic Over-Acidity From Cigarette Smoking

Latent tissue acidosis or sympathetic overactivity seems, in our point of view (1), to be the key factor in cigarette smoking as responsible for the development and progression of atherosclerosis.

Cigarette smoking increases latent tissue acidosis and efferent sympathetic nerve traffic acutely, as well norepinephrine and epinephrine release. The adverse effects of cigarette smoking are related to the mixture of chemicals, including nicotine that has been largely accused for many of the adverse effects of smoking on the cardiovascular system, including autonomic imbalance, endothelial dysfunction and coronary blood flow dysregulation. The acute sympathoexcitatory effects of smoking on the cardiovascular system are partially mediated by catecholamine release, muscle sympathetic nerve excitation and peripheral chemoreceptor sensitivity increase, consecutive to nicotinic receptor stimulation in the autonomic nervous system (2).

Both active smoking and exposure to enviromental tobacco smoke are associated with the progression of atherosclerosis as indexed by intimal-medial thickness of the carotid artery assessed by ultrasound. (7)

It is interesting to notice about the results from a study published in 2006 revealing that sublingual administration of a 4-mg tablet of Nicotine Replacement Therapy exerts acute deleterious cardiovascular effects and sympathetic activation (3).

Also interesting is the high sugar or acid content (up to 20% – including high fructose corn syrup – a toxic acid) of the popular brands of cigarettes (4,5).

Acidic sugars and other high-carbohydrate diets, particularly in the form of high-glycemic index carbohydrate, may also contribute for keeping the sympathetic nervous system overactive. (6)

Is The Radiation From Cell Phones Killing Honey Bees

A recent study has found that radiation from cell phones may be killing the honey bee population.
In a recent report in the journal Current Science, scientists are claiming that mobile phones are behind the disappearance of honey bees in Europe and North America.

They say radiation from cell phones is getting in the way of honey bees’ navigation senses, making them so confused they lose their way home.
This new research may explain why the bee population has declined for years in what’s being called Colony Collapse Disorder.
NBC 25 talked with Gary Briggs, a local beekeeper who says something needs to be done about this, because it’s becoming harder and harder to keep his bees alive.

“If we keep losing bees, pretty soon we are going to lose our food supply. So it’s a serious deal, and the sooner they can find out what’s causing it or what culmination of affects, is what I think we need to get to,” said Beekeeper Gary Briggs.
Biologists are saying that the signal coming from cell phones and their towers can be modified so that it doesn’t produce the frequency that disrupts a bees’ navigation.

And while Briggs says cell phone radiation may play a role, he’s convinced an increased use of insecticides is also contributing.

Question 4
Im scared:What should I do?…  I have hurt my bum by falling onto the floor because a idiot from my class pulled my chair back and I fell on my bum and now it really hurts. It happened about about 10am and now my bum hurts when I walk and when I bend over and i dont know what to do.Some people on yahoo answers have been saying that ive broken my tailbone or something so Im really really worried!
This boy is only in year 6,and he didnt know that he hurt me we were joking around and he didnt think that I was hurt cause he was laughing so he was joking so I dont know what to say.
I told my mum but she dosent think its serious I said a boy in my class pulled my chair back and i fell on my bum and now it really hurts when I bend over. And she sort of just said, "oh naughty boy!".She didnt really think that it was like proper bruised or injured she just thought that I banged my bum and now it hurts.I didnt tell anybody at school. So how should I tell her that it really hurts?

Answers
1)   It’s probably just sore, and not broken. You’d be in excruciating pain if your tailbone was broken. – Noel

2)   if you broke your tailbone you would be crying and not walking right now, sit in a nice hot bath then lay on a heating pad and take some pain meds if it does not go away in the next week go to the doctor or ER and tell them they will probably take a x-ray – Dustin

3)   First off you should report that idiot so when and if you go to the hospital he pays that bill not you. Tell your mom to take you to the hospital to get it looked out. Make sure you keep all papers so you can charge that idiot. Its one thing pulling a prank, its another when you injure someone. – TrueGreatness

4)   You probably did break your tailbone. You have to seek medical attention immediately. Get an x-ray and sue the person that hurt you. Make sure to document the accident today and have the principal sign it. You should not have to pay for someone else hurting you on purpose. Do the documentation before you go to the hospital. – peanut

5)   Well you wouldn’t even be able to sit down if you tail bone was broken :)

If you’re that worried, get an X-Ray. I’m sure it’s fine :) I hurt myself alot because I’m so clumsy. It just hurts at the moment but I don’t think you’ve broken anything. Like I said before, if you’re that worried then get it checked out.

Hope you get better soon

Question 5
should i get an x ray on my back? help please?…  I’m 19 years old 117 pounds. Since December I’ve had this problem… while i am asleep, my right arm goes to sleep. This only happens while I am sleeping, and sometimes my fingers go numb too. Doctors think it is the way my neck is positioned while I am sleeping. It only occurs when I am asleep though. All other times of the day, nothing goes to sleep. It’s a heavy arm feeling in my right arm/fingers. Left arm on occasion.

Lately I’ve been having a little neck and back pain that comes and goes.

What could this be? And should I get the X ray of my cervical spine? Could it be something serious? Doctors don’t seem to concerned.

Help.

Thank you

Answers
1)   Can’t get an xray without a docs order anyway, if the doc doesn’t think one needs ordered then you won’t be having one. – gazeygoo

2)   I would say listen to your doctor, they are the ones who went to medical school. Anyone with an internet connection could answer you here, but they won’t have the same qualifications as your doctor. – Vicky S

3)   You probably have some kind of nerve impingement in your c-spine that is causing this. It’s nothing major, and can easily be fixed by physical therapy or chiropractic care. I’d have the x-ray just to be safe, though. – Carrie Henry

4)   Go to your doctor and ask for an x-ray consult! – Maxsim Maximus

5)   Go and see your doctor again, and tell him your current problems.

If he says that you’ve already been checked out, tell him you want checking out again. Tell him also that you would like an XRay.

If he refuses, ask him "What happens now then? "

Whatever he replies, don’t accept it, unless it’s what YOU want.

He is not concerned, because it’s your neck, and not his.

Don’t let him put you off, keep on asking "What happens next"

If he still refuses to budge, say to him " Are you categorically telling me that you are going to do nothing about my illness?"

That will probably scare him into doing something.

Don’t think you can get a second opinion, you can’t. Second opinions are only available if your doctor agrees, and it will probably be a Specialists opinion, not another doctor.

Your doctor is the ONLY person you can see when anything is wrong with you, make the most of it. – Jacko

Young men smart more from cupid’s arrows

Contrary to the popular stereotype it could be young men who are more affected by the ups and downs of romance than young women. Researchers from Wake Forest University in North Carolina studied more than a 1,000 unmarried youngsters – aged between 18 and 23 – as part of a long-term study of mental health and the transition to adulthood. They found that the young men were more reactive to the quality of ongoing relationships and had greater emotional benefits from the positive aspects of a romantic relationship. The men were more affected by the quality of a relationship while the women were affected by whether they were in a relationship or not. The women expressed their emotional distress by depression while the men tended to develop substance problems i.e. got stoned or drunk.

Fermented Grain Recipes from Around the World

In my last two posts on grains, I described how traditional food processing methods make grains more nutritious and digestible (1, 2). I promised to briefly describe a few recipes from around the world, then got distracted by other things. Here they are.

Africa: Ogi

Grain fermentation is widespread in Africa and is probably nearly as old as agriculture on the continent. The nutritional importance of fermentation is suggested by the amount of time and effort that many African cultures put into it, when they could save themselves a lot of trouble by simply soaking and cooking their grains.

Ogi is a common West African porridge that’s eaten as a staple food by people of all ages. It’s even used as a weaning food. It’s made in essentially the same manner from corn, sorghum or millet.

Whole grain is soaked in water for one to three days. It’s then wet milled, mixed with water and sieved to remove a portion of the bran. Extra bran is fed to animals, while the white, starchy sediment is fermented for two to three days. This is then cooked into a thin or thick porridge and eaten.

South America: Pozol

At first glance, some people may think I left the ‘e’ off the word ‘pozole’, a traditional Mexican stew. However, pozol is an entirely different beast, an ancient food almost totally unknown in the US, but which fueled the Mayan empire and remains a staple food in Southeastern Mexico.

To make pozol, first the corn must be ‘nixtamalized’: whole kernels are boiled in a large volume of water with calcium hydroxide (10% w/v). This is a processing step in most traditional South American corn recipes, as it allows a person to avoid pellagra (niacin deficiency)! The loosened bran is removed from the kernels by hand.

The kernels are then ground into dough, formed into balls and placed into banana leaves to ferment for one to 14 days. Following fermentation, pozol is diluted in water and consumed raw.

Europe: Sourdough Bread

Sourdough bread is Europe’s quintessential fermented grain food. Before purified yeast strains came into widespread use in the 20th century, all bread would have been some form of sourdough.

Although in my opinion wheat is problematic for many people, sourdough fermentation renders it more nutritious and better tolerated by those with gluten/wheat sensitivity. In an interesting series of studies, Dr. Marco Gobbetti’s group, among others, has shown that fermentation partially degrades gluten, explaining the ability of fermentation to decrease the adverse effects of gluten in those who are sensitive to it (3). They even showed that people with celiac disease can safely eat wheat bread that has been long-fermented with selected bacteria and yeasts under laboratory conditions (4). Rye contains about half the gluten of bread wheat, and is generally nutritionally superior to wheat, so sourdough rye is a better choice in my opinion.

To make sourdough bread, first the dry grains are ground into flour. Next, the flour is sifted through a screen to remove a portion of the bran. The earliest bread eaters probably didn’t do this, although there is evidence of the wealthy eating sifted flour in societies as old as ancient Egypt and ancient Rome. I don’t know what the optimum amount of bran to include in flour is, but it’s not zero. I would be inclined to keep at least half of it, recognizing that the bran is disproportionately rich in nutrients.

Next, a portion of flour is mixed with water and a “sourdough starter”, until it has a runny consistency. The starter is a diverse culture of bacteria and yeast that is carefully maintained by the bread maker. This culture acidifies the batter and produces carbon dioxide gas. The mixture is allowed to ferment for 8-12 hours. Finally, flour and salt are added to the batter and formed into dough balls. These are allowed to ferment and rise for a few hours, then baked.

My Experience

I’ve tried making ogi (millet) and pozol, and I have to admit that neither attempt was successful. Pozol in particular may depend on local populations of bacteria and yeast, as the grains’ microorganisms are killed during processing. However, I do eat fermented grains regularly in the form of homemade brown rice ‘uppatham’ and sourdough buckwheat ‘crepes’. The buckwheat crepes are tasty and easy to make. I’ll post a recipe at some point.

The first two recipes are from the FAO publication Fermented Cereals: a Global Perspective (5).

I got a bump from falling down two years ago, and it won’t go away. Any suggestions?

Question 1
I got a bump from falling down two years ago, and it won’t go away. Any suggestions?…  I fell down a flight of stairs on the side of my left thigh, and it left a nasty bruise and a visible bump. The bruise obviously went away and I thought the bump would too, but its been probably two years now and its still there. Does anybody have any idea how to make the bump go down? It doesn’t hurt or anything, but it shows when I try to wear dresses or skirts :/

Any ideas?
Lol ok I’m not retarded; my father is a doctor and I asked him about it a long time ago. He said it wasn’t a big deal, and I don’t think it is. I’d just like to know how to get it to go away.

Thank you everyone that actually left constructive comments though. :)

Question 2
Just in a car accident…In a lot of pain, should I be more concerned?…  I was just in a pretty bad car accident this morning..Someone ran a red and went right into me doing at least 60mph. Nothing hurt at the time…When I got home it was hurting between my shoulder pains and getting aches in the back of my head, arms etc…I went to the hosp,,,the doc didn’t do a cat scan or xray…She basically just said it’s normal and gave me pain medicine. It’s now hurting whenever I breathe, I get a terrible sharp shooting pain in my back. Is this a sign of something more serious? Or could it just be soarness from being jolted?

Answers
1)   if it seems to be worse after a day; make a fuss. there,s little reason to be in pain. try some back stretches. if it makes the pain worse, see the doc. – David

2)   go back to the hospital and insist on xrays…sharp shooting pains are never good, and if they were going that fast, something could be broken, but the adrenaline kept you from feeling the pain until now. You’ll need x rays for insurance purposes, especially if the other person has crappy insurance company! – You asked, I answered

3)   Go back to the doctor and ask for xrays..the person who hit you will be responsible for all medical bills..I can’t believe they didnt do xrays the first time..ask for another physician, since that one is not someone I would trust. being hit at 60 mph is not a fender bender. It’s better to be safe than sorry,..hope u feel better soon. – ibsawdust

4)   It seems to me, like the doctor didnt give you the proper medical attention you needed.

In many cases, people come to the hospital claiming back pains so that they can receive pain medication, without the real need of them, so maybe thats what he was thinking?

I would go to another hospital or go back and explain to them exactly what happened, and request that they do some sort of medical examination, the at fault driver’s insurance will be responsible to pick up the bill just submit it to your insurance agency.

But if your having a hard time breathing, it could indicate serious issues in some cases, and then just be soreness of your muscles like you suspect. Even still, I would definitely be more concerned about it and would make a doctor pay you more attention. – Joe

5)   it is serious ,you may die or never walk again.

being stuck in bed or wheelchair

it’s a wake up call ,do something that will be worth it for yourself or for the love of your life

also go to the hospital about it.

live life to the fullest – Dorothy

Question 3
Diagnosis for snoring, severe snoring or what ever you call it..?…

Answers
1)   dont know what your body state is, but when i lost weight i know my snoring went down. you can try the spray and the little piece of tape over the nose, but only things that is guaranteed to work is the surgery, but that is pricey, and normally insurance will not cover it, but check with them anyway. – 456654

2)   My husband just did a sleep study and was diagnosed with sleep apnea, where he actually stops breathing for brief times during the night and causes snoring when he finally takes a breath. The doctor has recommended a CPAP to help keep the airways open at night, but he hasn’t started it yet. – Karen J

3)   Depending on what your GP thinks is causing your snoring, he or she will give you advice on what to do. If this doesn’t help stop the snoring, he or she may refer you to an ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialist or recommend that you see a dentist – Wes

4)   snoring simply means that your airways are not clear at night. try a different pillow, and as another user above me said, if you need to lose some weight, then lose some weight. this will definitely help out. – zimstar

Question 5
Can’t you get major carpal tunnel syndrome from playing guitar?…  I was just wondering, I mean if you look at the hand thats on the neck of the guitar it seems like the wrist is really curved and all.

I was interested in starting guitar, so I was just curious.

Answers
1)   i never thought of that. i,d ask a music teacher. they would know. – David

2)   Yes but the strange thing about carpal tunnel syndrome is moderate gentle movement across the wrist actually helps dissipate some of the pressure in that area. It’s about doing it in moderation. Over do it you get repetitive strain injury and/or carpal tunnel syndrome. Underuse it it freezes up on you. Need to use it just right, not too much not too little, just as far as your are comfortable. – apple guava
