Intervew with Chris Kresser of the Healthy Skeptic

Last week, I did an interview with Chris Kresser of The Healthy Skeptic, on the topic of obesity. We put some preparation into it, and I think it’s my best interview yet. Chris was a gracious host. We covered some interesting ground, including (list copied from Chris’s post):

  • The little known causes of the obesity epidemic
  • Why the common weight loss advice to “eat less and exercise more” isn’t effective
  • The long-term results of various weight loss diets (low-carb, low-fat, etc.)
  • The body-fat setpoint and its relevance to weight regulation
  • The importance of gut flora in weight regulation
  • The role of industrial seed oils in the obesity epidemic
  • Obesity as immunological and inflammatory disease
  • Strategies for preventing weight gain and promoting weight loss

Some of the information we discussed is not yet available on my blog. You can listen to the interview through Chris’s post here.

Prostate Nutrition Therapy for a Healthy Life

Because prostate nutrition and health are linked closely it only makes sense that if you are not eating a healthy diet your general health level will also decline along with your prostate health. If you have poor nutritional habits your chances of developing some form of prostate problem are increased. The thing to remember is that the key to good prostate health is eating a healthy diet.

Most men do not experience prostate problems, such as benign prostate hyperplasia or prostate cancer, until they reach the age of 50. Does this mean that you should wait until you are older before concerning yourself with the health of your prostate? The answer to that question is a resounding no! The earlier in life you take control of your health with diet and exercise the better your chances of fending off not only prostate problems but a whole range of other health problems as well.

When it comes to prostate health, prevention is the key and that begins early in life. The reason for the need to start early is the fact that many times diseases of the prostate develop slowly over time. In fact it is common for the prostate to enlarge slowly over the years until it becomes a problem later in life. The same is true of prostate cancer. It may grow slowly over many years with no signs or symptoms. It will remain undetected until that first prostate exam that most men do not have until they are well into their forties.

Researchers are currently devoting a lot of time analyzing the Eastern (Asian) diet and trying to find out what it contains that allows Asian men to have a much lower incidence of prostate related conditions then men of other ethnic origins. This is possibly because Asian men eat a much healthier diet than most Americans. It would only seem logical that the prostate diet needs to contain all of the ingredients that are commonly found in an Eastern diet while cutting out the unhealthy saturated fats and simple carbohydrates that are found in so many Westernized foods.

It is also true that genetics may play a role in prostate disease. This means that if you have a close male family member who has suffered from prostate disease your chances of having prostate problems are greatly increased. With the use of prostate nutrition therapy you may be more able to avoid these conditions even if you are more genetically predisposed to it.

While changing your diet and lifestyle once diagnosed with a prostate problem may well help slow down or even reverse the condition, doesn’t it make sense to avoid any illness through prevention? This is where prostate nutrition is so vital. In fact nearly all nutritionists and many doctors support the idea of a proactive and preventative approach when it comes to prostate health. It is never too early to begin considering and implementing prostate nutrition.

Diet and Alzheimer’s disease – more research backs healthy diet

There has already been a lot of research into the links between diet and Alzheimer’s disease and a new study by researchers at Columbia University Medical Center in New York has added more weight to the evidence linking a healthy diet to a reduced risk of the condition. The researchers asked more than 2,100 New Yorkers aged 65 and over about their dietary habits and over the next four years 253 of them developed Alzheimer’s. However, those whose diets included the most salad dressing, nuts, fish, tomatoes, poultry and dark-green leafy vegetables and the least red meat, high-fat dairy, offal and butter had a 38% lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s than those whose diets included fewer fruits, vegetables and poultry and more red meat and high-fat dairy.

Young drug users prefer being high to being healthy

Researchers from Liverpool John Moores University and IREFREA, a European body which researches drug use and its prevention, have been looking into ‘recreational’ drug use and its impact on people’s happiness and well-being. They studied 1,341 16-35 year-olds in nine European cities. Starting to use drugs at a younger age and using them more frequently were linked to poorer life satisfaction and more suicidal thoughts and hopelessness. Younger people who used drugs more frequently placed more value on having fun than maintaining long-term health. People who were homosexual or bisexual were more likely to report hopelessness, suicidal thoughts and dissatisfaction with life and more likely to prefer fun to health. People who had started using cocaine at a younger age were more likely to have thought about killing themselves in the last 12 months.

How To Easily Modify A Healthy Diet While Traveling

nutritious diet while traveling, healthy eating while traveling, healthy eating, healthy food, nutritional meal, diet, health, healthy eating habits

Sticking to a nutritious diet while traveling can be one of the more difficult things to do. However, if you learn how to make smart choices, a healthy diet is really not that difficult. It’s probably not the best time in which to start a healthy diet, but if you are currently making healthy choices in your foods already, modifying your diet slightly to accommodate travel, is not as difficult as it first may seem.

If you are traveling by airplane, your diet may have to include airplane food, which can often be of poor nutritional value, depending on the selection. When you book your flight, ask about your food options, ask if a vegetarian dish is available? Vegetarian dishes are sometimes more nutritional in this case, but it really depends on what they may be serving. If you can, eat a larger meal before your flight, so that you don’t have to eat the entire meal that is served, to feel full.

When driving or taking a bus, you may be tempted to stop at fast food restaurants and eat the meals found there. Avoid this whenever possible! If you’re on vacation, you may wish to splurge a tiny bit, but having fast food more than once during a week can really be bad for your health. If you must, choose the healthiest options available, like chicken breasts and diet soda.

Also, remember that you can take your own meals when traveling. Carrying a loaf of whole-wheat bread or pita wraps, some lean lunch meat, and low-fat cheese in a cooler is a great way to avoid high-fat and high-cholesterol junk food meals. These are much better choices and you’ll save a lot of money as well. Call ahead to ask if there will be a refrigerator in your hotel room.

Lastly, make smart choices when you eat out. If you choose salads or pasta get the dressing on the side and ask about low-carb options. In fact, many places print these dieting options directly in the menu for the health-conscious people. Control your portions by ordering lunch menu sizes or splitting the meal in halve and getting a doggie bag, and you’ll be well on your way to healthy eating, even away from home.

Yes, eating healthy foods when you travel can be a challenge. However, your health is worth it. Eating meals high in nutrition will also assist in fighting illnesses that you are likely to encounter when traveling and you will find yourself more alert so that you can enjoy your trip.

Where To Shop For Healthy Food

I took a poll regarding what people struggled most with. The majority said that they struggled the most with eating healthy. Sometimes it does take one a little while to change one’s bad habits. Until, one can become strong enough to resist the foods that are not good for them they must put themselves in an environment where they can make better food choices. Eating and shopping is no different.

When you know better you have to do better. So, where can you shop to make better food and health choices?

Health food stores are a great place to shop. They are small and it’s easy to find what you need and you don’t get so overwhelmed. I believe that you will also be more likely to try out different foods that you might of not thought of to try which are better for your health.

Here are some name’s of health food stores:

1. The Natural Food Patch
2. Trader Joe’s
3. Whole Foods Market
4. Wild Oats
5. The Better Health Food Store

Another store that is not a health food store but in my opinion is making an effort to give their customers better food choices is Meijer’s.

Eating locally is good for your health too. You should eat foods in your locale because they contain the cure and antidote for all the little viruses, bugs, and special bacterial strains that occur in your area. Today, we are getting food from all over the world, and we don’t know what kinds of chemicals they are using to treat them or what’s in them.

A prime example is the salmonella problem we are now having. They don’t know where the problem is coming from. That is another disadvantage of having food coming from everywhere. They don’t know who is doing what.

To find out where you can buy your food locally go to: Local Harvest.

A way that you can tell if your food is grown locally is to look on the package and it will tell you if that fruit or vegetable is grown in your state. Randazzo’s sells a lot of Michigan produce and they also have honey from there too. You should be able to know where your food is coming from and this is a way that you can.

What Are The Benefits of Healthy Snacks & What Are The Best Foods To Eat?

healthy snacks for weight loss, healthy snacks to lose weight, healthy snacks, healthy eating for weight loss, healthy eating to lose weight, healthy eating, healthy food

The truth about healthy snacks for weight loss is that they
are vital to eat during the day. Research has discovered
that people who do not snack consume more food at mealtimes.
People who do not snack end up consuming more fat and
calories than those people who do snack between mealtimes.
People still wonder though what the benefits are to healthy
snacking and what kinds of foods are actually considered
‘healthy.’

The most beneficial thing to healthy snack eating is that
you do not binge later on foods that are unhealthy to curb
your hunger. If you are suffering from a growling stomach or
hunger pangs, then you should snack now versus waiting for
the next mealtime. Hunger management through the day is
important not only for proper eating but also for
maintenance of blood sugar levels. So, how and when should
you consume your snacks?

So what types of foods are included in the healthy snacks
category?
Whole grain foods are a good choice because of the
fiber content in them that gives you that needed energy to
last until a full meal. Some great options for this are
whole grain crackers and whole grain pretzels. These and
other healthy selections can be found in the organic snacks
section in your local grocer.

Other obvious choices of healthy snacks for weight loss are
fruits and vegetables. They are low in calorie, fat free,
and are loaded with all the vitamins and minerals that the
body needs. A word of warning, though; if you decide to have
some salad for snacks, go easy on the salad dressing.

Another great snack are nuts and seeds. They are full of
protein but are high in calories, so do not consume too many
of them in one sitting.

You can also snack on foods which are rich in calcium but
low in fat while waiting for dinner. These include light
yogurt and cheese which was processed with skim milk.

What times are the best times for these snacks? On the
average, most people have breakfast at around 8 am and in
this case, a 10:30 am snack should keep you going until a
1:00 pm lunchtime. Afternoon snacks are usually eaten around
3:30 pm, and then it’s dinner time at 6:00 or 6:30 pm. This
sample schedule shows that the ideal healthy snack is eaten
within 2-3 hours before and after a meal. This would allow
you to eat smaller and healthier, while keeping you full
enough to go about your daily activities.

Healthy snacks are important in your goal of losing weight.
People who do not snack end up hungry and frustrated when
meal time comes around and then they forget about all
intention of losing weight, eating fatty foods that do
nothing for their health. This habit does not also bode
well for the blood sugar and could complicate even further
when symptoms of emotional and physical stress manifest
themselves. It may not sound correct when you say that
snacking is good for losing weight, but this is the truth.
Not only will you end up consuming less calories, it will
also help you concentrate on what you have to do instead of
warding off the hunger pangs.

By keeping yourself focused on the end goal, you’ll end up
thinner and healthier. Healthy snacks for weight loss are
the way to go.
